BECOME A HEART LAKE AMBASSADOR!
One of the draws of the Heart Lake area in the Great Burn Proposed Wilderness is the resident Mountain Goat herd. Goats are naturally curious and love salt, so become habituated to humans when they are allowed to lick sweaty backpacks or eat human food. Over time, this behavior can create dangerous situations for the goats, pets, and humans. The thing is, all of this can be prevented by practicing a few simple steps while in camp and on the trail.
This year, GBCA is launching the Heart Lake Ambassador program. We are looking for volunteers to hike in the Heart Lake area during busy summer weekends and let campers know how to deal with a pesky goat (or a whole herd!) in their camp. Injuries or accidents can lead to trails being shut down or removal of goats, and we want to avoid both of these! This is a great way to get out for a hike while simultaneously performing an important conservation service.
Volunteers will also perform light stewardship duties, to ensure the wilderness character of the area remains intact. Volunteers will be required to complete a training prior to field work. Each volunteer will also be provided a Heart Lake Ambassador shirt and GBCA hat!
