To Chris French, Deputy Chief for National Forest Systems; Leanne Marten, Regional Forester, Northern Region; and Cheryl Probert, Nez Perce-Clearwater Forest Supervisor

The Blacklead area is one of the wildest landscapes in the larger Great Burn ecosystem. This rugged, remote region is home to one of the Great Burn’s native mountain goat herds, and it provides important winter denning habitat for wolverine mothers and kits.

Despite the risks, the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest may open this fragile habitat to winter motorized use.

Decades of illegal snowmobiling are already impacting the Blacklead mountain goat herd, which is struggling to survive. If the region becomes a snowmobile play area, the disturbance could have devastating impacts to both the mountain goats and wolverines.

Please protect Blacklead’s wildlife and continue to manage this wild landscape as recommended wilderness.

Our work in Blacklead

In addition to advocacy, the Great Burn Conservation Alliance works to protect the larger Great Burn ecosystem with on-the-ground stewardship programs. For decades, our Backcountry Ranger has patrolled the Blacklead area, cleaning up camps, replacing vandalized signs, and conducting mountain goat surveys.
